Clips from Lana Del Rey's New Music Video...with A$ap Rocky As JFK?

I stumbled upon this video containing clips from Lana Del Rey's video for "National Anthem" (just in time for the 4th of July). Lana Del Rey resembles a young Jackie O while JFK is played by none other than..... rapper A$ap Rocky? He's not exactly the first person we'd expect to portray JFK, but nevertheless, from what we see in this video he does a good job. We can't wait to see the final product of this video (especially of the fashion - we blame our obsession with 1960's fashion on Mad Men).

New Music: Lupe Fiasco - Bitch Bad

Finally, a smart lyricist intelligently tackling the issue of the glamorization of the word "Bitch" in a hip hop song. Lupe, thank you. Seriously, thank you.

Artists We Love: Iggy Azelea

"Who is this girl? Is she from the south? Why is she rapping with T.I.? In fact, why is she on Grand Hustle's Youtube channel? Is she another Kreyshawn copycat?"

If you are not familiar with Iggy Azelea, these are the thoughts that are probably going through your brain right now as you watch the video above. What is this gorgeous blonde girl doing with T.I. talking about "Murda Bizness"? Ladies and gentlemen, this is in fact T.I.'s newly signed artist to his Grand Hustle Records. This is 22-year old Amethyst Amelia Kelly, better known as Iggy Azelea, and she is an Australian rapper that moved to the US in 2007 to pursue her dream. We think she's pretty bad ass. Let us count the ways:
  1. She Defies Stereotypes: We've seen many non-African American female MCs try to go into hip hop and fail miserably for multiple reasons. The fact that this girl has hustled her way into the top and became the first female on XXL's Freshman Class is a major achievement that is to be celebrated.
  2. She Can Rap, Period: Yes, we get that her Southern accent in her music can rub people the wrong way. Yes, we get that she is Australian. However, we don't care, honestly. Iggy is an MC that perfected her craft in Miami, Houston, and Atlanta, therefore we are not surprised if she rhymes with a Southern twang. Rihanna sings in an Americanized accent but when you speak to her, the Bajan comes out. There's a huge group of artists from the UK that sing without a British accent. Iggy is applying this same concept to hip hop music. We like her style and her flow. Yes, we understand that her lyrical content may offend people. However, we've heard worse from MCs. As long as she's not telling us to Shake Our Laffy Taffy, then we are ok.
  3. Grand Hustle + Iggy Azelea = Perfect Match: While we may not know of every detail of her label situation, we think that the partnership with T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records is absolutely perfect. Her musical style is very similar to T.I.'s so we are highly confident that this is the most organic business partnership she could have formed for her budding career. She has also recently signed to Wilhelmina Models International where they will "explore and develop endorsement, editorial and licensing opportunities" for Iggy. Very smart move indeed.
  4. Her Style: WE LOVE IGGY'S STYLE.  See below:

Gwen Stefani Swag (As We Like to Call It)

The high ponytail. The bold lip stick. The cat-eye. We love it!

The Gwen Look In Action:

She Thrifts!

In article on Vibe Vixen, Ms. Azelea admits to being "kinda obsessed" with thrifting. She even provides a few pointers that will help better your thrifting experience:
"Be patient. The first hour that you get there when you’re not finding stuff, you’re like, ‘This is shit. I hate it. Why did I come?’ You have to keep looking. Too, you have to have an imagination. A lot of the stuff you have to change or tailor. You have to modify almost 90 percent of the stuff you find, so you have to have an imagination. Then, really evaluate what it’s worth. ‘Cause a lot of times, you go in thinking you’re going to get everything for $20 and you kinda can overlook some stuff. Like there was this awesome Misfits jacket that we got, and it had been refurbished from the 80s. We got it for $250, and when you go thrifting, you’re not thinking of spending that much but you really have to ask yourself if you can find that again."
She's a Bad Ass Pin Up Girl

We've noticed that she likes to mash up bold colors and prints with motorcycle jackets, leather skirts, and bold rocker accessories. She's also mentions being a huge fan of traditional tailored pieces such as high wasted pants and pencil skirts. Very pin-up indeed.

Amazing Adele Transformation

I love Adele. In addition to being an amazing singer, Adele has amazing style. I've always been a huge fan of her 1960's inspired hair and makeup.  I stumpled upon the following video from one of my favorite YouTube make-up gurus, Promise, who does incredible image transformations. Check out her transformation into Adele:

My Summer 2012 Jam: Azealia Banks - Liquorice

Azealia, you did it again girl! I've been a huge fan of this track since I first listened to Azealia Banks' EP (For you Spotify heads, go here to listen). I love it. The beat is reminiscent of those early 1990's dance hits you danced to as a kid (well, for us 80's babies). Ms. Banks spits FIRE and you can't help but to dance or do the Naomi Campbell walk to this track. Here is the recently released video for "Liquorice." Check it out!

Now first of all, I LOVE THE HAIR. I recently (well, not recently - it's been a few months) did the ombre on my hair and it looks like the shorter version of Azealia's hair in this video. The fashion in this video is a great mix between Old Westerner movies and Zorro with a touch of 1976 style with this awesome patriotic ensemble:

You too can channel your inner patriotic Azealia just in time for Independence Day. Check out the following style ideas for your July 4th wardrobe:

Women's America Crochet Bikini - $68 - 80's Purple

Saturday Night's Alright Red Shorts - $30 - Lulu's

Jeffrey Campbell The Lita Shoe in Stars and Stripes - $160 - Karmaloop

It's Been Awhile....

I hope you all are having a great start to your summer! Yes, I know, it's been awhile since I've posted on the blog. The last couple of months have been really busy due to work and other endeavors. However, I'm excited to announce that the blog will be undergoing a few changes during the next couple of months so please excuse our dust. Currently our Facebook page is down due to change of accounts. However, it should be back up in no time! I'm excited for the things to come, including a couple of major concerts that are coming my way in the next couple of weeks. I wish you all a lovely and relaxing summer!
